Konut üretimi insanlık tarihindeki en eski üretim alanlarından birisi. Gezgin -avcı- toplayıcı topluluklar yerleşik düzene geçerken, ilk tarımsal üretim etkinlikleri ile eş zamanlı olarak, hatta ondan da önce yapma barınakların üretilmeye başlandığı biliniyor. Başka canlıların çevre koşullarına uyum sağlayabilmek için sahip oldukları biyolojik özelliklere sahip olmayan insan, içinde bulunduğu çevre koşullarına uyum için bazı önlemler almaya başlıyor. Gezginlik dönemindeki mevsimlik çukur barınaklar ve ateşi rüzgardan koruyacak çitler de göz önüne alınırsa Anadolu'da yüz binlerce yıllık bir süredir barınma amaçlı üretim çeşitlenerek devam ediyor.

The production of housing is one of the oldest fields of production. When nomadic hunter gatherer societies began to settle, they started constructing shelter. This was simultaneous with- or even prior to -the first attempts at agricultural production. Since man does not possess the biological characteristics that other living creatures have that enable them to adapt to environmental conditions, certain other measures had to be taken to ensure that he would be able to do so. If the pit shelters and the fences used for protection against the severe winds of the nomadic period are taken into consideration, it can be said that shelter oriented production, through a process of increasing diversification, has been going on for hundreds of thousands of years.
